Cathy’s instruction
Our fieldwork — underwater work, as it were — was its own kind of learning experience.
We’d get a short briefing on the boat, then gear up and head down. Kathy would appear out of nowhere — just materialize at your shoulder — reach over, look at your camera, check your settings, and make adjustments on the spot. Sometimes she’d pull out a small whiteboard and grease pencil to explain what she’d changed, or what you were doing right or wrong. Other times she’d simply point you toward a different subject or angle and let you figure it out. Communicating all of that without words, thirty feet underwater, was an education in itself.
It was a wonderful experience, and I carried what I learned into underwater photography for years afterward. You’ll see some of that in future posts if you follow along.
