Osprey Families on East Beach

Soon to Fledge

The first nest, at the intersection of East Beach Boulevard and Shearwater, looks like it could fledge any day now. Three chicks, all looking strong and healthy — when I was there, one of the parents had brought in a nice sized fish and was feeding all three. They are a pleasure to watch.

The second nest is running about two weeks behind. Two of the three chicks look well along, but the third is noticeably more immature than its siblings. I am pulling for it. While I was filming, one of the parents flew in with a fish, passed it to the mate, and settled on a nearby limb while the mate tore it up and fed the chicks. One of those moments that reminds you why we spend time in the field.

I’ve also included a short video. Fair warning — I am still very much learning the craft of video, and the lighting leaves something to be desired. But it gives you a feel for the scene. Enjoy.
