Fortune’s Favorite Child, The Uneasy Life of Walter Anderson – By Christopher Mauer

I was in Realization: The Walter Anderson Shop, the Anderson Family store in the old Ocean Springs train station, one afternoon, looking for a coffee mug with a particular one of Walter’s pelican paintings. https://walterandersonart.com/ I got into a conversation with another browser and the lady behind the counter. We were all knowledgeable about Walter and his work. While checking out, she asked what I had read, and I ran through the list of books by and about Walter that I own or have read. She asked if I had read FORTUNE’S FAVORITE CHILD by Christopher Maurer; no, I had not heard of it before. Do you have it? She said, “No, the family does not approve of it, but with your interest in understanding Walter, you might want to consider it.” I have since acquired the book, and it is the first Walter Anderson book I am struggling to get through. It is a clinically written book, and the disapproving foreword written by Walters’ son, John, has made it challenging, but I will eventually find the closing page.
