A Therapeutic Trip to Ward Bayou

July 28, 2026

Patty came home from Alaska, exhausted, but feeling fine, but a few days later — whether it was the plane rides, the airports, or a crowded eye appointment after she got back — she came down with a miserable summer cold. One of those where you are miserable one day, the next you think you are on the mend only to wake up sicker the following day.

Looking for a way to brighten her spirits and change the scenery, I talked her into a short early morning drive out to Ward Bayou. It didn’t cure her — she spent the rest of the day on the couch — but it put a lot of smiles on her face, and she thanked me more than once.

She showed her full appreciation by passing the cold on to me.

“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”

John Burroughs
