Deer Island from Bird Barge

In search for a visiting Caracara

We had a wonderful morning skirting the island. A bit windy and choppy, but absolutely beautiful. At one point a large bird in the pines near the new dredging area got our hearts racing — but our excitement shifted from Caracara to Bald Eagles. Word had been that the eagles had all headed north for the summer, but there’s still a mature pair on the island and what appears to be one of their offspring. We also had great numbers of Osprey, Pelicans, and a good variety of shorebirds and wading birds. No Caracara, but we’ll keep our eyes open.

I have included an image of the Crested Caracara, I did not take this, it is off the web and the artist was not identified.

We do love the Bird Barge — it’s just about perfect for what we do. Coming up, Saturday I’ll be taking Patty and two birding friends, Rhonda and Holly, out for a day of dropping them off at different spots along Deer Island and cruising the coastline.
