Beautiful Fall Weekend: Friends, Festival & Nature

Upper & Lower Rhymes Lakes, My favorite, and Patty’s go-to spot, Ward Bayou.

On Friday, we drove up to Upper & Lower Rhymes lakes (1) in George County, MS. This is one of my favorite locations within 55 minutes of home. It is absolutely beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. These are oxbow lakes, previously part of the Pascagoula River, before nature straightened that part of the river. During flooding, the lakes rejoin the river, which makes for interesting changes in the landscape, fish, and wildlife. This area of cypress swamps and lakes is part of the vast PWMA (Pascagoula Wildlife Management Area), going all the way south to the Gulf of Mexico.

Monday, we returned to Ward Bayou. It was so cold, a bit quiet birdwise, but a very pleasant morning.

(1)-The MDWFP (Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks) website’s official map for the Pascagoula WMA North uses the spelling “RHYMES LAKE”. The Mississippi Coastal Birding Trail site refers to them as “Rines Lakes”.
